About the Book

In the final years of the Vietnam War, young American soldier Gene Harper falls in love with Phu Nu Vet, a Vietnamese woman working with children at a Catholic charity in Saigon. Their relationship grows amid a country coming apart around them, and together they imagine a future in America. But when Saigon falls in April 1975, chaos separates them. Pregnant and desperately searching for Gene, Phu Nu reaches the U.S. Embassy too late. Gene is evacuated believing the woman he loves has been lost forever.

Nearly fifty years later, Gene is an aging veteran facing another devastating loss. His wife Beverly is dying, his family is fractured, and increasingly troubling lapses in memory lead to a diagnosis of cognitive impairment. Yet while pieces of Gene’s present begin slipping away, memories of Vietnam—and of the young woman he once loved—remain remarkably vivid.

Gene’s daughter Ashley discovers that her father’s past contains a story he has carried quietly for decades. At the same time, Vietnamese-American medical assistant Phong Tran has spent much of his life searching for the American father he has never known. His mother, Phu Nu, has never forgotten the soldier she was separated from during the fall of Saigon.

As two families unknowingly move toward one another, Gene faces a race more personal than anything he encountered in war: finding the people time took from him before his own memories disappear.

About the Author

James “JC” Leach, USAF (Ret.) is a U.S. Air Force military veteran, technical writer, instructional designer, and screenwriter whose work blends operational realism, geopolitical tension, and deeply human stakes.

With more than two decades of experience across military aviation, electronic warfare, technical documentation, intelligence-related training, and instructional design, JC brings a combination of field knowledge and narrative discipline to his fiction. His U.S. Air Force career included electronic warfare and airborne systems, thousands of flight hours, and extensive experience working within complex military and aerospace environments.

After years developing screenplays, James brought that same cinematic instinct to long-form fiction, combining visual storytelling, technical authenticity, and character-driven suspense.
